Coker 71, Carson-Newman 65

HARTSVILLE, SC – It was a much different story for the cold-shooting Lady Eagles, who shot a season-low 33.8% in the South Atlantic Conference road loss to the Cobras.

The second-half was particularly dreadful as Carson-Newman (8-2, 11-3) made just 10-of-38 attempts (26.3%) and missed on 18-of-32 layup attempts.

"They did a good job and played us super physical," Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey said. "They chased us off the three-point line and wanted us to beat them with twos. I think we made good reads and got to the rim a lot. But, on the road we didn't make enough of them to pull out a victory. You can't win games on the road if you miss that many layups."

Jennifer Sullivan paced the Lady Eagles with 20 points. Lindsey Taylor was the only other double figure scorer with 17 points to go with eight rebounds and three steals.

Tori Rutherford (Grainger) finished with seven points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists and Campbell Penland (Northview Academy) added nine points, five rebounds and a pair of steals.

Mya Wasswa scored a game-high 21 points for No. 23 Coker (8-1, 12-1).

Emory & Henry got within six at 77-71 with 1:23 to go, but Anderson went five-for-six at the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.

Wasp junior forward Breanna Yarber (Partrick Henry, Sullivan Central) poured in a game-high 25 on 12-of-25 shooting and added 11 rebounds and two blocks.

MEN

Alice Lloyd 82, West Virginia Tech 75

The Eagles rally from a ten point deficit over the final minutes to snag an 82-75 victory over West Virginia Tech at the Perry Center.

Jared Strickland (Dobyns-Bennett), who recently scored his 1000th career point, led Alice Lloyd (1-1, 10-3) with 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting from three-point range to go with six rebounds and two steals.

Carson-Newman 103, Coker 97

HARTSVILLE, SC – The Eagles drilled 19 three-pointers and held off the No. 18 Cobras for the South Atlantic Conference road win.

The 19 threes are the fourth-most in a game in school history and the most ever in a road game, and the 65.5% is the third-highest shooting percentage in school history.

The win snaps a three-game road losing streak for the Eagles while giving Carson-Newman its second consecutive win over a ranked foe and the first on the road since a nine-point triumph at No. 17 Queens in the SAC title game in March, 2021.

"Our shot-making was off the charts," said Eagle coach Chuck Benson. "I thought our defense was solid, especially when it needed to be solid. We had some game-specific goals that we wanted to meet and we did that. They're the best in the country with 16 threes per game, we wanted to keep them under that and we held them to 12. We made more free throws than they attempted.”

The Eagles established a lead early thanks to the three ball that accounted for the first 21 points. Carson-Newman started 8-of-10 from beyond the arc, finishing the first half 12-of-17 from range to take a 54-51 lead at the break.

"Sometimes, we'll attack and take the open shots,” continued Benson. “Our guys did a great job of knowing when to do either one. Everyone was willing to make the extra pass to find catch shots, which is what we were looking for."

A 13-5 burst put the Eagles up 11 with 10:13 to go after a Jack Browder (Dobyns-Bennett) three and a pair of free throws.

Browder finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine boards. John Zhao (Sevier County) led the way with 29 points, going 9-for-11 from the field and adding four rebounds. Braden Ilic (Morristown East) supplied six points, seven rebounds and seven steals.

Milligan 76, Johnson 74

MILLIGAN – The Buffs returned to AAC play for the first time in three weeks and came away with the hard-fought win over the Tony Jones-coached Royals.

Handje Tamba scored 22 points on an efficient 9-of-12 shooting to lead Milligan offense.

McCaskill Rivers had a strong 17-point night with Jayme Peay and Sam Gold also reaching double figures with 11.

Peay (Dobyns-Bennett, Tri-Cities Christian) just missed a double-double with nine rebounds to go with his four assists.

The Saints rallied from 18 points down to the South Atlantic Conference victory over the Saints at Pioneer Arena.

Limestone outscored Tusculum 52-35 in the second half, including a game-ending 10-0 surges over the final three minutes.

Tusculum sophomore Bryce Jackson poured in a career-high 35 points in the setback, going 13-of-28 from the floor and 8-of-11 at the free throw line. Jackson tied a Tusculum single-game record with his 28 field goal attempts, matching the total recorded by Jeff Riley against Alice Lloyd College in 1986.

Denaj Kimber added 10 points for Tusculum (3-6, 3-10) while Akeem Odusipe tallied six points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

MOUNT OLIVE, NC – Ja'Quavian Florence led four Bobcats in double figures with 20 but it wasn’t enough in the Conference Carolinas loss at Kornegay Arena.
