Venezuela doubles down on intention to arrest opposition leader who claims he defeated Maduro

  • AP

Venezuela’s government has doubled down on its intention to arrest the opposition leader who claims to have defeated President Nicolás Maduro in last year’s election. This time the threat comes from the ruling party-controlled congress. Without mentioning Edmundo González’s name, National Assembly leader Jorge Rodriguez on Sunday said the unicameral body would order the immediate arrest of the retired diplomat should he step on Venezuelan soil. The threat follows the government’s recent announcement of a $100,000 reward for information on González’s whereabouts and comes less than a week before Venezuela’s next presidential term is set to begin. González left Venezuela for exile in Spain in September after a judge issued a warrant for his arrest.

Music Review: Bad Bunny's 'Debí Tirar Más Fotos' is a love letter to Puerto Rico

  • By MARIA SHERMAN - AP Music Writer

Bad Bunny has released his sixth album, an opus on his beloved Puerto Rico. On “Debí Tirar Más Fotos,” which translates to “I should have taken more photos,” Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio pulls from the island’s rich musical history and hybridizes it. Associated Press Music Writer Maria Sherman writes in her review that “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” modernizes música jíbara and other Puerto Rican folk. Opener “NuevaYol" is a love letter to New York that weaves dembow into a sample of El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico’s salsa "Un Verano en Nueva York." “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” celebrates the music at the heart of Puerto Rico and brings it to the world.

Trey Lance has started at quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys against the Washington Commanders. It's his first in the regular season since San Francisco’s third overall pick from the 2021 draft was still with the 49ers. The Cowboys were out of playoff contention going into their finale against the postseason-bound Commanders. Cooper Rush started the previous eight games after Dak Prescott’s season-ending hamstring tear. Lance was acquired by Dallas for a fourth-round pick last season after he lost the battle for the backup job in San Francisco. He played extensively this preseason.

The man responsible for the deadly truck attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day visited the city twice before and recorded video of the French Quarter with hands-free glasses. The investigation is continuing into Jabbar’s motives and how he carried out the attack before he was killed by police during a firefight. The former U.S. Army soldier proclaimed his support for the Islamic State militant group in online videos posted hours before he struck.

  • By JAMES ROBSON - AP Soccer Writer

Raul Jimenez scored a 91st-minute penalty to salvage a 2-2 draw for Fulham against Ipswich in the Premier League. It was Jimenez’s second penalty of the match as Fulham twice came from a goal down at Craven Cottage. Relegation-fighting Ipswich went ahead through Sam Szmodics in the 38th and Jimenez leveled from the spot in the 69th. Ipswich went in front again through Liam Delap’s penalty in the 71st and looked like climbing out of the relegation zone. But when Jimenez was brought down by Leif Davis in the box, referee Darren Bond pointed to the spot again.

Border shelters relieved the pressure during migrant surges. Under Trump, they could become a target

  • By VALERIE GONZALEZ - Associated Press
  • 4 hrs ago

Republicans are stepping up their scrutiny of dozens of shelters run by aid groups on the U.S. border with Mexico. President-elect Donald Trump’s allies consider the shelters a magnet for illegal immigration. Many of them are nonprofits that rely on federal funding. Trump’s incoming border czar has vowed to review the role of nongovernmental organizations and whether they helped open the doors to the immigration crisis. The developments have alarmed immigration advocates and some officials in border communities, including Republicans. They say communities can collapse without shelter space or a budget to pay for humanitarian costs. Aid groups say they are responding to emergencies foisted on border towns.

No Jan. 6 disruptions are expected as Trump's win boosts Republicans' faith in elections -- for now

  • By NICHOLAS RICCARDI - Associated Press

Four years ago, then-President Donald Trump rallied his supporters to march to the U.S. Capitol and urged his vice president to stop the congressional certification of Democrat Joe Biden's victory. No such drama is expected when Congress convenes to count the Electoral College vote this Jan. 6 — Monday. Some political experts say the true danger point is Jan. 6, 2029, when Congress will be scheduled to accept the electoral votes for the winner of the 2028 presidential election. Presiding over that session would be Trump's then-Vice President JD Vance, who's said Biden's election in 2020 should have been overturned.

TikTok creators left in limbo while awaiting decision on potential platform ban

The fate of TikTok is keeping creators and small business owners in anxious limbo as they await a decision from the Supreme Court that could upheld their livelihoods. On Jan. 10, the court will hear arguments on a law requiring TikTok to break ties with its Chinese-based parent company, ByteDance, or face a U.S. ban. For creators, the TikTok doomsday scenarios are nothing new since President-elect Donald Trump first tried to ban the platform through executive order during his first term. But despite Trump’s recent statements indicating he now wants TikTok to stick around, the prospect of a ban has never been as big as it is now with the Supreme Court serving as the final arbiter.

It formally took effect Sunday. The cost to drivers depends on what time of the day it is and if drivers have an E-ZPass, an electronic toll collection system that’s used in many states.

Pakistan slips to 155-6, still trails South Africa by 460 runs in 2nd test

South Africa’s youngest test cricketer Kwena Maphaka got the key wicket of Babar Azam as Pakistan slipped to 155-6 on the third day of the second and final test on Sunday. The 18-year-old Maphaka celebrated his maiden test wicket in his debut test when the left-arm fast bowler had Babar caught down the leg side and left the visitors still trailing by 460 runs at lunch. Pakistan is effectively seven down because Saim Ayub has been ruled out of competitive cricket due to a fractured right ankle for at least six weeks after the opening batter sustained the injury on the first day. Aamer Jamal was unbeaten on five with tailender Khurram Shahzad yet to score at the interval as Pakistan still needed 261 runs to avoid the follow-on.
